Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITS)
This is a pool of money which, when combined with other investors’ money, is used to purchase real estate according to the prospectus. Typically there is a flow of income to the investor each year and the trust matures after a period of years.
REITs expose an investor to special risks associated with investing in real estate. There is the potential for investment illiquidity, the units/shares fluctuate in value and redemption amount may be more or less than the original amount invested. Individuals must meet specific suitability standards before investing. Any dividends are based on rental income and are not guaranteed.
